Things to Do in VR This Weekend: MOMA Raves Celebrates An Anniversary
VR began to take off during the pandemic, although it still remains a bit of a niche endeavor, as the world opens up again. One thing many of us discovered was that in the midst of a plague, we could still experience nightlife in immersive worldscapes, which Audere has written about frequently.
Over the course of the last year, “MOMA Raves” (the name is an amalgamation of “Manon” and “Monster”, the two organizers) has sponsored thirty different dance club parties in VR.
This weekend, organizers Mikael Zacke Zachrisson (the “Monster” in “MOMA”) and Manon Smits celebrate one year of parties with a meet-up on Friday night (perfect to get to know the crowd, if you are a newbie) followed by a traditional rave on Saturday night.
“It was with little knowledge of what was to come that first time on March 26, 2021,” writes Zacke. “With no experience in running events and subsequently having issues in both performance and audio, it could have ended there and then. But thanks to Manon insisting that ‘next time will work better’ the saga began.”
Zacke tells us that over the course of the last year, the thirty MOMA raves have been set in fifteen different virtual worlds, encompassing 120 hours of dancing and 8950 total unique joins.
“This weekend we first do a meet up on Friday night to let anyone interested come and hear a little about the history of MOMA, and chat with all that are there. No music and dancing. The location the first one not built by Monster, but by Manon and (mostly) Veronika. Next, on Saturday, we have a classic event with music and dancing at Sponza Palace, where the name MOMA was used the first time for event #5.”
