Your Sunday Funnies: Buster Brown, from 1903

Richard Felton Outcault was the creator of The Yellow Kid, or Hogan’s Alley, a beautiful work of art, which was also the very first comic strip. With his Buster Brown comic, he achieved a lesser effect, although more lasting fame, because, of course, the name lives on as shoe company.

While less innovative than his other work, Foucalt did apparently come up with the concept of the “talking pet” for Buster Brown, which has had an impact on comic strips and cartoons that has lasted to the present day. Whether this was good or bad is a matter of taste.
