Israel and other democracies limit protests

Israel, like many other Western countries, has limited protests during the Coronavirus pandemic, but its limitations seem more draconian than most.

During its current, second lockdown, Israel has limited demonstrations to no more than 20 participants, who must practice social distancing. Protesters also may be no more than a kilometer from their homes.

In Great Britain, Denmark and the Czech Republic, demonstrations were exempt from bans on public assemblies. Sweden and Australia made no exceptions for demonstrations in the rules limiting the size of public gatherings. (Neither did France, but a court struck down the ban in June.)
Italy permitted no demonstrations during its lockdown earlier this year.

The study was conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute located in Jerusalem.
